Walking down the winding backstreets of Seville, Spain I came across a son, his father and his father struggling to carry towers of blue hat boxes, eyes popping with excitement I followed them into a shop. It was a Traditional shop with equestrian and matador hats stacked to the ceiling. I wanted to experiment with the strength and power of the bull fought by the matadors and the delicacy of a simple everyday material such as paper. Bulls are colour blind and do not see the red or pink in the cape - it is only tradition and I wanted to point this out using only white in the collection, fusing this with paper and the characteristics of it. I have used experimental and durable materials such as leather and Tyvek, which a similar appearance to paper but does not rip, mixed with delicate traditional millinery materials such as sinamay and sparterie. Each piece is hand blocked and hand stitched together using traditional methods and techniques but with modern materials.
